CERTIFICATE II IN TRANSPORT SECURITY PROTECTION 

(International Airport Screening Officer) 


The Certificate II in Transport Security Protection provides you with the training necessary to become a qualified Transport Security Screening Officer (Aviation Protection Officer). This qualification is required from January 2022, by government legislation, to be completed in full to allow a new Aviation Protection Officer to be offered employment at an Australian airport regulated by the Department of Home Affairs – Aviation and Maritime Security (AMS). All Security providers providing aviation security screening services at an Australian airport will request this as part of any employment application.


This qualification includes the units of competency required by Transport Security Screening Officers to perform transport security screening functions including, controlling access to security sensitive areas, undertaking physical searches, and identifying and handling weapons, explosives and prohibited items. A Transport Security Screening Officer must also apply effective communication skills with people of various backgrounds and ages to work in a broad range of transport security protection roles. The Skillset for International Airport Screening Officer also includes all of the qualification and unit requirements for Domestic Airport Screening Officer.


COURSE DETAILS


Individuals must be 18 years or over.

Individuals undertaking this qualification must have passed a valid background check. A valid background check for the purposes of an individual undertaking the qualification is a background check on an applicant for an aviation security identification card (ASIC Card). Please see the details for your ASIC (Job Ready) background security check. This process takes 2-6 weeks to complete and therefore is important to understand the requirements and to complete the Application form and your forms of identification in a timely manner so you can continue training with any restricted security sensitive units..

ISS Training Pty Ltd is a Registered RTO in Australia. ISS Training is not a CRICOS RTO and is not authorised to deliver this or any other courses to International Students in Australia. 

This course consists of blended delivery with an online eLearning training delivery for the entry level knowledge components followed by a practical classroom/workshop component. This is undertaken at an onsite classroom block at a major airport where ISS training is available such as Brisbane, Melbourne or Perth.

Core Units of Competency:

Prior to commencement of the core units a student needs to obtain an ASIC security clearance in the form of an ASIC Card or Job ready ASIC letter of confirmation from a Department of Home Affairs approved ASIC provider. ISS Training will provide details of this process to all students.

International Airport Screening Officer 

This Skillset consists of 12 units to complete. When combined with the Core unit’s, It includes all necessary units for the Qualification AVI20118 Certificate II in transport Security Protection (International Airport Screening Officer)


AVIO0011:   Manage disruptive behaviour and unlawful interference within a transport security environment

AVIO0004:  Conduct frisk search of persons

AVIO0005:  Conduct screening using explosive trace detection

AVIO0012:  Manage the flow of items for screening by X-ray screening equipment

AVIO0014:  Screen articles by interpreting X-ray images

AVIO0013:  Operate body scanner

AVIO0010: Identify powders, liquids, aerosols and gels (PLAGs)

AVIO0006:  Conduct vehicle search for access to security sensitive areas

AVIF0015:  Apply awareness of dangerous goods and hazardous substances in the transport security environment

CPPSEC3121:  Control persons using empty hand techniques

CPPSEC3128:  Conduct security screening using -through metal detection equipment

CPPSEC3130:  Conduct security screening using hand-held metal detectors

For the completion of the core units and practical requirements of the course after you have received your ASIC security clearance, there will be a period of time at an airport facility at an Airport in one of the following city’s where ISS Facility Services is contracted to provide security screening services.

  1. Download and read the Course Outline Brochure,  SC3.6 - Course Outline AVI20118 Certificate II in Transport Security Protection for the full list of entry and enrolment and entry requirements and confirm you satisfy the requirements and understand the course duration, technical requirements for e-Learning, the on-site training requirements at an airport, any fees and charges and the ASIC security clearance details and application process.  
  2. If you have been interviewed for a job by ISS Security at an Airport and are required to gain the qualification, your details will be sent to the RTO and you will be sent an online enrolment form by email with a link to enter in your personal details and USI number.
  3. Submit the online form or send any questions to rto.admin@au.issworld.com 
  4. ISS Training will review your online application form and process this online. You will then be sent an invitation to complete the LLN assessment. 

The following information will be provided to students at the beginning of each course


  • A course outline indicating units of work, units of competency, assessment requirements, materials and equipment required
  • A student handbook containing details for your training journey and what to do in case of any changes or problems.
  • Credit transfer process for any previously completed Qualifications, Statements of Attainment that may be considered by ISS Training to be credited towards your training

A Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills assessment will also be conducted to ensure you can meet the requirements of the course within areas of the English language, Written English and simple mathematics and numbers that are a requirement for this course. Most students if they have completed a year 11 or 12 at High School, or worked for several years in a retail or office environment will find they are confident in these areas. These are the areas you would also need to be proficient and competent in your chosen industry training area.


It will help identify and assistance needed or in some cases the need to undertake a LLN improvement course with a separate RTO skills training college prior to enrolment. This is not covered in the course fees if required.

4 months duration maximum – Average duration 4-5 weeks depending on student online completion prior to classroom practical block.

You may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning for part or all of your intended study, based on your previous experiences and learning. For more information regarding RPL and how to apply, please discuss this with your educator.

You may be eligible for a credit transfer if you have previously undertaken training through a Registered Training Organisation. Credit transfer may be granted for one or more units or a full certificate level.


Three major factors need to be considered:


  • How current the qualification is
  • Mapping to the current training and
  • If the training was undertaken with a Registered Training Organisation.


If you think you may be eligible for a credit transfer you will need to provide the following:


  • The original Statement of Attainment and/or Certificate for your educators to sight
  • A copy of the Statement of Attainment and/or Certificate
  • Or a certified copy of your qualification signed by a Justice of the Peace (JP)
